BUTTERFIELD RECEIVES FELLOW AWARD
from the Society for Range Management (SRM)
Dr. Charles H. “Chuck” Butterfield of Alpine, WY, formerly of Chadron, NE, received a Fellow Award at the Society for Range Management’s (SRM) 67th Annual Meeting held February 8–13, 2014, in Orlando, FL.
The Fellow Award recognizes SRM members for their exceptional service and contributions to the Society and its programs in advancing the science and art of range-related resource management.
Dr. Chuck Butterfield came into a range management program at Chadron State College that was new and working toward establishing itself. He and his faculty built it into one of the leading producers of range management graduates in the United States. Chuck consistently had a large contingent of students who attended not only the Nebraska Section and the Annual Meetings of SRM but also neighboring State SRM Section meetings. Two of his teams won the Rangeland Cup competition in Wyoming and placed third nationally in the Rangeland Cup competition at the SRM Annual Meeting in 2007. His teams annually participated in almost every aspect of student activities at the Annual Meetings including Plant Identification, Undergraduate Range Management Exam (URME), graduate poster competitions, undergraduate and graduate paper presentations, Rangeland Cup and undergraduate public speaking. Six of his students have served as national officers for the Student Conclave.
Chuck was a natural guide for these students in these activities, having been President SRM’s Student Conclave himself, and an extremely active member of the Student Activities Committee for 15 years; serving as Conclave Co-advisor for 10 years, and being active in the Plant ID contest for 32 years. In addition to the Student Activities committee, he has served as the President of the Range Science Education Council (RSEC) and 7 other national SRM committees, task forces or councils, and has served as the Nebraska Section President; all of which are valuable assets in guiding students into active roles within the Society. Chuck was an instructor in the Nebraska State Range Youth Camp for 12 years, the Nebraska Range Shortcourse for 14 years and the Envirothon Contest both in Nebraska and nationally for 19 years.
After 30 years in academia Chuck began working for Y2 Consultants, a natural resources and engineering consulting firm based in Jackson, WY, in June 2013 as a Senior Environmental Scientist conducting rangeland monitoring and preparing EA’s for producers and federal and state rangeland management agencies - basically practicing what he has preached for 30 years.
It was with great honor that the Society for Range Management presented Dr. Charles “Chuck” Butterfield with a Fellow Award for 2014.
